Hi Everyone, Your exam room and seating assignments are now posted on the Chem 233 eCampus page within the course gradebook. Many of you have had trouble with one particular part of this question from OWL. The issue that most of you are encountering is you end up with a Lewis structure where carbon has a +1 formal charge. Sometimes this is unavoidable. In this problem, however, since there is a nitrogen (with a lone pair) next to the carbon, it can donate its lone pair through resonance to give a better structure where all atoms have an octet. See the attached solution below.

A few things of interest: 1. The WVU testWELL center will be holding a Chem 233 exam 1 review session on September 24th from 7-8 pm in Honors Hall. I have included a link to the sign-up sheet below. They have a max capacity of 20 students. I do not have any affiliation with this review session, but assume they will do a good job. Sign-Up Sheet 2. The Tuesday recitations have been scarcely populated while the Thursday recitations have been overpopulated. Regardless of your section, it does not matter which recitation you attend. If you want more individual attention or have had trouble finding a seat on Thursday, I recommend coming to the Tuesday section. Also, we have an available tutor during recitation on Tuesday who provides additional assistance. 3. Exam 1 is next Thursday and will cover Chapter 1, 2, and most if not all of Chapter 3. Hi Everyone, I just wanted to remind you that Quiz 1 will be held during the last 10 min of class tomorrow. The quiz will cover all of Chapter 1 and formal charges from Chapter 2. I will include a periodic table on the quiz that you can look at. As with the practice quiz, the quiz tomorrow will be administered via TopHat. Hi Everyone, We will have recitation for Chem 233 this week. The recitation periods are Tuesday at 2:30 pm and Thursday at 2:30 pm in the Chemistry Learning Center. Unless a cancellation is announced in class or sent via email, you can expect recitation to be held every week for the duration of the semester. Attendance is not mandatory and will not be taken, but you can benefit from recitation in several different ways. 1. Office Hours - I will be in my office during the recitation period if you have any questions. 2. Extra Problem Solving Practice - When you come to recitation there will be a worksheet available for you to pick up. Once you have the worksheet you can sit down and attempt the problems. I will be around if you get stuck or have any questions. About mid-way through the period, I will provide an answer key so that you can check your work.
